About us

Welcome to Oxenfoord…

Oxenfoord International Summer School is a residential course based in Musselburgh on the outskirts of Scotland’s capital. With the addition of new classes and tutors for 2017, we continue to offer an inspiring setting for singers and accompanists to make new friends, meet old ones and share music through performance, building on 37 years of coaching, workshops and masterclasses.

This year we’re delighted to welcome back Irish mezzo-soprano Ann Murray DBE as our guest Masterclass tutor and I will continue to offer Song Repertoire and Accompaniment classes in addition to the popular Song Cycle Class. In 2017 we also welcome new tutors David Cowan, Head of Music at Opera North, Timothy Dean, Head of Opera at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (1994-2017), Scottish Soprano Catriona Clark, and acting, presentation and communication skills coach Bridget McCann alongside our existing team of specialist teachers. Please see Tutors and Accompanists for updated biographies and Classes for the full range of class descriptions.

In 2017  we invite applicants for the Hester Dickson Duo Prize, in memory of my mother and founding staff pianist on the course. The prize will cover full fees for a singer and pianist to continue developing their special ensemble relationship. Please click on the link below for the application form relating to this award. We will also be announcing the recipient of the Sam Hutchings Pianist Prize in due course, providing an opportunity for a young accompanist to work alongside our experienced staff and play for classes and rehearsals as required.  New for 2017, we will be introducing the Elizabeth Pink Singers Award, which will focus on the English Song repertoire.

On Saturday 22nd July, Junior Oxenfoord returns for a set of coachings, masterclasses and performances for children between 14 – 18. Participants will work with me and perform in concert that evening alongside one of the major bursary holders from the main course. Places are limited, so please contact us or download the Junior Oxenfoord Application Form below for further information.

With additional tutors and classes for 2017, Loretto’s suite of all-Steinway pianos and many opportunities for students to perform together, we’re expecting yet another rewarding year. To apply please download the Application Form and do let us know if you have any questions, we’d love to hear from you.
