About us

Welcome to Oxenfoord…

Building on 38 years of masterclasses, coachings and workshops, Oxenfoord International Summer School is an annual, week-long, residential course for singers and accompanists based on the outskirts of Scotland’s capital city, Edinburgh. Taking place each year within the grounds of Loretto, Scotland’s oldest boarding school founded in 1827, we continue to offer an inspiring setting for students and staff to make new friends, meet old ones and share music through performance.

We’re delighted to welcome back our returning guest Masterclass tutor Irish mezzo-soprano Ann Murray DBE who, along with myself, will lead the week’s tuition, which includes public masterclasses and the popular song cycle workshops. Also returning is celebrated international soprano Susan Bullock and acting coach and text specialist Jacquie Crago, plus new tutors for 2018, Yorkshire-born soprano Sarah Fox and coach and conductor Anthony Kraus. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all our returning tutors and accompanists, who are leading specialists in their field and whose contribution make the course the special place that it is. Please see Tutors and Accompanists for updated biographies and Classes for the full range of class descriptions.

In 2018 we invite applicants for the Hester Dickson Duo Prize, in memory of my mother and founding staff pianist on the course. The prize will cover a generous scholarship for a singer and pianist to continue developing their special ensemble relationship. Please click on the link below for the application form relating to this award. The recipient of the 2018 Sam Hutchings Pianist Prize is Ewan Gilford, who will work alongside our experienced staff and play for classes and rehearsals as required.

On Saturday 28th July, Junior Oxenfoord returns for a set of masterclasses, coachings and performances for young people between 14 – 18. Participants will work with me and perform in concert that evening alongside one of the major bursary holders from the main course. Places are limited, so please contact us or download the Junior Oxenfoord Application Form below for further information.

With additional tutors and classes for 2018, Loretto’s suite of all-Steinway pianos and many opportunities for students to perform, we’re expecting yet another rewarding year. To apply please download the Application Form and do let us know if you have any questions, we’d love to hear from you.
