Gary Matthewman is well-known to British audiences as one of the UK’s leading song-pianists and vocal repertoire coaches, performing worldwide with many of our leading singers and coaching regularly for the Royal College of Music and the Royal Opera, Covent Garden. In recent years he has swiftly gained recognition as a conductor, with a focus on opera and vocal repertoire.

A regular artist at Wigmore Hall, other recent and forthcoming appearances as pianist include recitals at Carnegie Hall New York, Musikverein Vienna, Rudolfinum Prague, Philharmonie Paris, Bolshoi Theatre Moscow, and in Barcelona, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Lisbon, Stockholm, Verbier, Washington DC, Santa Fe, Toronto, São Paulo, Cape Town, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Hong Kong, Melbourne and Sydney. He has appeared frequently in both live and recorded broadcast for the BBC, and his recording of Schubert’s Winterreise with Matthew Rose received widespread critical acclaim, featuring as ‘Recording of the Month’ in Gramophone magazine and ‘CD of the Week’ on BBC Radio 3.

Gary’s assisting positions as a conductor in opera include Stravinsky The Rake’s Progress and Donizetti L’elisir d’amore for Glyndebourne; Britten Turn of the Screw for La Monnaie Brussels; Puccini La bohème for Cape Town Opera; Shostakovich Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk and Wagner Das Rheingold for the late Sir Graham Vick’s Birmingham Opera Company.
